182nd Day

Hello! How are you getting along? Do you enjoy your summer? I saw the picture of the crowded beach in Toronto on the newspaper website. Please take care not to get Covid-19.

By the way, your grandpa got out of the hospital last Tuesday and now he spends all day in his bed at his own house.

father at home

Since that day, your grandma and I have been busy taking care of him, such as inhaling his sputum and changing his diaper. We feel grateful to have such a valuable opportunity to spend with him and nurse him at home. When he was in the hospital, we rarely visited him because of the the coronavirus pandemic.

Last Saturday my brothers and their families visited him and they were able to see him. He couldn't speak but he moved his hands and expressed his feelings. That was great! When your grandma asked him, "Do you need something for you?" He wrote the words on the whiteboard. He could not hold the marker well but he managed to finish his writing.

Nobody understood his writing but I did it. He wrote ”特にナシ." After that, he showed us silent clapping meaning that it was all right. We were happy to see him showing a little actions. After that, his condition got worse and worse.

He sleeps most of the time and he looks half conscious while he is awake. We don't know how many days he will be alive but it wouldn't be long. Your grandpa loves you very much and he often tells us that you will grow up to be something.

You have only 4 months left in Canada. Please make your days special. Your grandpa believes that you are a good girl.

We love you always

Take care!!

172nd Day

Hello. How are you?
Your grandpa's condition is getting worse little by little. His mind is getting frail but he remembers you very well. We often visit him in order to take lessons for home care. The most important care is getting rid of his sputum from his mouth or nose. We had hard time using the aspirator. Grandma pushed the wrong button again and again. I have to play the main role of inhaling his sputum. Now he can't eat any food nor can he drink. Therefore, we can't expect his recovery. Doctor told us that his life would be a few months. I'm afraid that he would not survive until you come back home.

This is the photo you took him last January. We took a short walk to see plum blossoms.

Take care!!

165th Day

Hello. How are you doing? I have to tell you that your grandpa doesn't have much time.

I visited him yesterday. He has been hospitalized for about 2 weeks. We are very close to the hospital but we can't see him without particular reasons such as the consultation with his doctor because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He looked very frail. He struggled to tell something but we couldn't understand his words. Lots of sputum in his throat blocked the flow of his words. His condition seed worse than the last time we saw him. According to the nurse, his ability to swallow food or drink is almost lost. It means he is going to death. Anyway we have decided to take care of him at home and make his final days more valuable. If he stays at home, we can talk to him, touch him, and make his mind more active.

This is the photo of our last outing with him.

Take care!!

159th Day

Hello. How are you getting along? Your life in Canada has just reached a turning point. I hope you can achieve something you will be proud of after getting back to Japan.

By the way, your grandfather got hospitalized with pneumonia last Sunday. We were very shocked that he had been fine for a long time. Last Friday we were able to see him for the first time since his hospitalization. He said, " I want to go back home."
The trouble is that he is losing the ability of swallowing food. If he can't take food from his mouth, it might be difficult to get back to the normal life. Now we are faced with a decision of whether to adopt a gastrostomy tube. He is in late eighties and it would be hard for him to get an operation.

Anyway when I showed your picture, he still recognized you and told you that he was fine and hoped you too. I wish he will be fine until you come home in December. Let's pray for his recovery!!

Take care!!
